Valencia: bike tour

How does Valenbisi work for tourists in Valencia?

Valenbisi is Valencia's public bike-share with 276 stations citywide. Tourist passes cost €2 for 24 hours (unlimited 30-minute rides). Register online or at any station with a credit card. Each ride must be under 30 minutes to avoid charges, but you can re-dock and take another bike immediately.

Valenbisi is one of the most practical ways to move around Valencia independently. The system covers 276 stations across the city and runs 24 hours a day. For tourists, a €2 daily pass is enough to use bikes all day, provided you understand the key rule: each ride must be under 30 minutes, but you can immediately re-dock and take a new bike.

How the system works

Valenbisi operates on a dock-based model. Bikes are taken from any dock and returned to any dock. The pricing logic rewards short trips (as the system is designed for commuting) but works equally well for tourism if you understand the 30-minute return rule.

The 30-minute rule: A €2 pass covers unlimited rides. However, if a single journey exceeds 30 minutes, extra fees kick in: €0.50 for the next 30 minutes, then €1.50/hour after that. For most tourist purposes — riding from the old town to the Turia Gardens, from the park to the Ciudad de las Artes, from the beach to the city — individual journeys are well under 30 minutes.

For longer rides (the full 8.5 km Turia route without stops takes about 25 minutes at a relaxed pace), the system works. For exploring slowly and stopping frequently, you will need to return the bike at an intermediate station.

Registering and getting started

Option 1: Online registration

  • Visit the Valenbisi website (valenbisi.es) and register with a credit card
  • Receive a user code and PIN by email or SMS
  • Enter these at any docking station terminal to unlock a bike

Option 2: At a docking station

  • Select “Tourist Subscription” on the terminal
  • Enter credit card details
  • Note: a €150 security deposit is held on your card, released when you return the bike and end the subscription

Option 3: Via the Valencia Tourist Card The tourist card includes 24 hours of Valenbisi access. Register via the card’s QR code or accompanying documentation.

The Valenbisi app (iOS and Android) shows real-time station availability and the number of bikes and empty docks at each station. Essential for checking before walking to a station, especially in the centre where popular stations run out of bikes in the morning.

Where the stations are most useful

City centre and old town: High density around Torres Serranos, the Cathedral, Mercado Central, and along the main shopping streets.

Turia Gardens: Stations at both the western (Bioparc) and eastern (Ciudad de las Artes) ends, plus at several intermediate points. Enough coverage that you can ride the full route with one or two strategic returns.

Beach: Stations at Malvarrosa beach promenade and at several points in El Cabanyal.

Airport to centre: Valenbisi does not extend to the airport. Use metro (Line 3 or 5) for the airport connection.

Where the system thins out: Some residential neighbourhoods have sparser coverage. If you are staying in a hotel outside the centre, check the nearest station location before relying on Valenbisi for daily use.

When Valenbisi is the better choice: Day trips with short individual journeys (old town → Turia → Arts → back). Using Valenbisi alongside the tourist card for maximum value. Urban commuting between accommodation and attractions.

When private rental is better: Families needing children’s bikes or cargo bikes. Full-day Turia rides without returning to stations. E-bike touring. Riding beyond central Valencia (beach, Albufera area).

The bikes: what to expect

Valenbisi bikes are solid city bikes — heavy but functional. Single-speed with coaster (pedal-back) brakes. The design favours upright riding rather than efficiency, which is appropriate for the flat city terrain.

Before taking a bike:

  • Check that the saddle adjusts and holds position (some are worn and slip under weight)
  • Test the front and rear brakes before leaving the station
  • Ensure the wheels spin freely without rubbing

If the bike is damaged: Use the yellow indicator tag on the docking station to mark it as unavailable, or report via the app. Do not cycle on a damaged bike — the responsible party for unreported damage can default to the last user.

Lights: Valenbisi bikes have hub dynamo lights that activate automatically when you cycle. No batteries to worry about. They are adequate for navigating the lit Turia path at night but not bright enough for unlit roads.

Getting the most from Valenbisi as a tourist

Start your subscription in the morning. The €2 24-hour pass begins running from activation, not from first use. Activate it when you first pick up a bike to get the most from the day.

Plan your returns. Before any ride over 20 minutes, identify the next station on your route. The Valenbisi app shows availability in real-time — if a station is full, it shows alternatives.

Peak hours and empty stations: From 8:00–10:00 on weekdays, popular stations near the university and the centre run out of bikes quickly. Tourist areas are less affected. Check the app rather than assuming availability.

The Turia route strategy: To ride the full Turia Gardens from west to east using Valenbisi: take a bike from the western-end station, ride to the Gulliver Park station (about 20 minutes), re-dock, walk or play, take another bike east to the Oceanogràfic station. This works within the 30-minute window and covers the best sections.

Alternatives to Valenbisi

Private operators: Several bike shops near Torres Serranos and near the Turia path offer hourly and daily rentals with more variety — cargo bikes, children’s bikes, e-bikes. Rent and Roll Valencia and Valencia Bikes are established operators.

Guided tours: For a first ride in an unfamiliar city, a guided tour provides context and eliminates navigation uncertainty. See the e-bike tours guide and the Valencia by bike guide for curated options.
